In eighth but positioned 120 miles east of ninth placed Jean Le Cam, Les Sables d'Olonne's young Benjamin Dutreux spoke about his frustration trying to get out of the Doldrums on the 0400hrs UTC call this morning.

« Daybreak will be in about four hours, but the big problem is the weed. It is everywhere and I spend my time trying to remove it  from the hydrogenerato. I can see it better during the day, but it's really a big problem: maybe I crossed an area where there are a lot of it but this is impressive. I'm worried about my hydrogenerator because my engine is not in a good way and so the weed bothers me  because my power now comes mainly from the hydros.

It was very hot before I got into the Doldrums but since then it's been much nicer and the rain rinsed the boat (which needed it) and I was able to take a shower. Physically and morally, I'm starting to get a little frazzled because these doldrums have lasted a really long time. When I think of all those who have told me that coming up from the south is easier. Here we have had something really tough and I can't wait to see the end.

I took a more easterly position, thinking it was going to all break down quickly, and on the way out, I would be well positioned for my straight daggerboard boat. But I have the impression that Jean (Le Cam) has been out of it since last night. Despite all our diversions to the left or right of each other we keep meeting up and that is pretty cool. We'll see what happens because in theory it's better to be further east to tackle the high pressure. We will see what happens with my positioning but I will be closer on the wind while the foilers will put the bow down… But hey I will have my J2 as I have repaired it and I will need it so I hope it will hold! »
